Bubu and the Big Catch: Stories of the Southern Islands

Did you know that one of Singapore’s indigenous communities is the Orang Laut (People of the Sea)? This seafaring group has lived in Singapore and its surrounding islands for generations, shaping our rich maritime heritage. This September school holiday, join us for a fun-filled, interactive session with Orang Laut SG to discover their stories, food, and culture. Try your hand at using a bubu trap (a traditional fishing tool) and craft your own sea creatures to take home! This session is specially curated to complement the PLAY + MAKE exhibition, an imaginative maker’s space where children explore Singapore’s food heritage through hands-on activities.

How does a childhood love for cooking lead to mastering one of Indonesia’s most beloved and challenging treats – kueh lapis? Join us for a special storytelling session by Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations, as we spotlight the inspiring journey of Anastasia Tjendri-Liew, founder of Bengawan Solo and affectionately known as the Queen of Kueh Lapis. Through engaging role-play and interactive mini games, discover the passion, perseverance, and heritage behind her iconic creations. This session is specially curated to complement the PLAY + MAKE space, an imaginative maker’s space where children explore Singapore’s rich food heritage through hands-on activities.
