Explore the macabre visual language and cultural memory of vintage cinematography with a special film programme dedicated to classic Singaporean and regional horror cinema. Hosted at the historic Oldham Theatre inside the National Archives of Singapore building, this curated series is presented by the Asian Film Archive to celebrate the golden age of cinema across Southeast Asia. The programme is enriched by a National Library Board showcase uncovering behind-the-scenes history and a panel discussion exploring the evolution of the genre, with filmgoers encouraged to attend the cinema screenings in their favourite horror or fantastical costumes.

Featured film screenings:

Orang Minyak

A village comes alive with fear when a nefarious ‘oily man’ terrorises women in the dead of night. At their wits end, the local police enlist the help of talented police inspector Dasuki to trap and end the oily man’s mischief.

Orang Minyak was digitally restored by the Asian Film Archive in 2018 using a 16mm black & white composite release print from its collection.

Tiger Stripes

Zaffan was just like any teenage girl until her period started. When her friends found out, they ostracised her for her ‘filthiness’. After undergoing even more strange bodily and behaviournal changes, her parents decide to get her treated by a snake-oil exorcist. However, that only pushed her to fully unleash her monstrous form – which also comes with newfound freedom.

Roh

A strange girl visits a vulnerable mother and her two children with a frightening prediction, and the forest comes alive with terrors.
