Under the Same Sky: Bencoolen Stories 2026

Bencoolen Stories is an arts-led, community-engaged project spotlighting the dynamic, layered stories and intangible cultural heritage that make Bencoolen Street unique. The 2026 edition celebrates the living legends keeping the historical resilience, creative pulse and community spirit of Bencoolen street alive. Through a series of evocative illustrations, this project explores Bencoolen Street through the overlooked yet edifying stories of its denizens, from culinary experts to spiritual guides, familiar shopkeepers and creative entrepreneurs. Importantly, the artworks serve not only as visual testaments but also as an open invitation for all to come share your own memories and experiences of Bencoolen Street. Join us in documenting the enduring pulse that define the street’s soul.

About the Artist

Bencoolen Stories 2026 is produced by the NAFA Cultural Policy Lab, and illustrated by Bernadeth Bertha Sondjaja (b. 2004), a Singapore-based illustrator working across traditional and digital media. Originally from Bandung, Indonesia, her artistic practice is driven by a deep curiosity about human connection and the nuances of everyday experiences. Her work often probes these themes through editorial and community-based storytelling, presenting them as emotionally resonant narratives for heightened and alternative ways of seeing.
