This captivating story, by Ombak Potehi, picks up after Sun Wukong's epic journey to retrieve the scriptures, finding him enjoying well-deserved leisure on Huaguo Mountain. However, his peace is shattered by news that the Dragon Palace has descended into chaos and the Dragon King has vanished. 

Upon arriving at the seashore, Sun Wukong is horrified to discover the ocean severely polluted. He quickly uncovers the malevolent hand of the wicked Poison Lord behind this environmental devastation. The narrative builds suspense as Sun Wukong must now confront this new threat and devise a plan to rescue his friends and the missing Dragon King. Discover his heroic solution by watching the show!

This performance is part of The Puppet Stage: Handcrafted Stories. Presented in partnership with George Town Festival, and as part of AT SG 2025. The performances are co-presented by the National Library Board and HeritageSG. NLB hopes to inspire the discovery of hidden stories and facets of Singapore’s past from the collections of the National Library and the National Archives of Singapore.

Performed in Malay, Mandarin and Chinese Dialects with English surtitles.

About Ombak Botehi
Ombak Potehi is a collective of multiethnic young people who have tried to revitalise the endangered Potehi glove puppet theatre in Penang, Malaysia. They studied the art of puppet manipulation, narration and music from the traditional troupe, Beng Geok Hong Puppet Show, in Penang.  The group has made Potehi accessible to people of races, genders, ages and income levels and to promote the sharing of cultures among the diverse people of Malaysia.
