Roots to Routes

Roots to Routes

"…instead of asking what are people’s roots, I (we) ought to think about what are their routes, the different points by which they have come to be.”
– Cultural theorist Stuart Hall, 1999

Speaking directly to culturally significant designs, products and practices, this quote urges us not to consign our roots only to the past. Instead, we should recognise the complex routes that have carried our roots to the present day and will lead us towards the future.

Roots to Routes is a cross-disciplinary inquiry project that explores the connection between fashion and culture. It is realised in collaboration with The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, and involves the students from the Level 2 BA(Hons) Fashion Media and Industries and BA(Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles in LASALLE’s School of Fashion. Students combine both theoretical knowledge and technical skills within their creative practices to explore and question the global context of fashion as they develop fashion products, brand identity and marketing strategy. The project calls on students to explore the continuation of processes, practices and products through fashion design, image-making and storytelling.

Fashion design is in a continual state of becoming. These processes, practices and products from our region deserve to be continued in the future. Roots to Routes is grounded in the context of today's social and cultural sphere to allow people to reflect on and address them in an ever-changing fashion system.
