Archives Invites Dr ANG-EISELT
Archives Invites: Dr ANG-EISELT, Chin Siew
Archives Invites: Dr ANG-EISELT, Chin Siew
Established in 1823 under an initiative of a known proponent of British imperialism, Stamford Raffles, in the heart of Britain’s rapidly growing Asian empire, during what Ronald Hyam calls Britain’s “Imperial Century,” the Raffles Museum is an artefact of British colonialism’s ideologies, agenda, and strategies of rule.
In this talk, Dr ANG-EISELT, Chin Siew reads the Museum — site, building, history, collections, archives — as a museum object for what it reveals about British colonial rule of Singapore, Raffles’s political style and vision, and more importantly, for what colonialism felt, looked like, and meant, to those who lived under its inexorable logic.
