Archives Invites – Dr Mohamed Effendy: Researching and Preserving Intangible Cultures of the Malay Martial Arts Groups in Singapore
Singapore’s history has been viewed in exciting fresh perspectives in recent years. The discovery of new materials, especially historical and archaeological sources, has led to new ways of understanding the island’s past.
Join Dr Effendy from the National University of Singapore as he shares his research about the Singapore Malay community from his project, “Preserving Intangible Cultures: Documenting and Recording the History, Culture and Memory of Malay Martial Arts Groups in Singapore”, sponsored by the National Heritage Board. During this session, you will also learn how to access and analyse materials and contextualise historical findings.

Dr Mohamed Effendy bin Abdul Hamid is a lecturer at the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, National University of Singapore. Trained as a historian, he has wide interests that include pre-colonial Southeast Asian history, colonial Southeast Asian history, post-colonial and modern Southeast Asian history, as well as martial arts studies.
Community histories unfold in this series that traces Singapore’s social past with help from the archives.
