Whether it’s photographs, building plans, manuscripts or maps, our conservators work on them to preserve them for future generations. Find out more about the optimal conditions to store them and learn how to detect and remedy signs of deterioration in this introduction to the photographic collection at the National Archives of Singapore. Our guest speaker Tay Jam Meng will also share his recent research findings on glass plate negatives. The talk is suitable for those who are interested in learning more about NAS’s photographic collection, conservation, and also for photography enthusiasts!

About the Speakers
Chng Yak Hock and Cassandra Tang are conservators from the Archive Conservation Lab department at the National Archives of Singapore. They conduct interventive conservation on paper-based records and support preventive conservation work undertaken by the department.Chng Yak Hock joined NAS in 1979 as Archives Conservator in Archives Conservation Lab. He completed training and internships at SEAMEO Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Art (Malaysia), The Centre for Photographic Conservation (London), and Public Records Office (London). He also led a team to provide conservation training and sharing of knowledge for Myanmar National Library and The National Archives of the Philippines. He was redesignated as Estate Officer from 1997 to 2008 before returning to Archives Conservation Lab. He was involved in the management and maintenance of building and facilities in NAS. He was also involved in the renovation projects of Reflection at Bukit Chandu and Memory at Old Ford Factory as well as managing the maintenance of building and facilities for both premises.

Cassandra Tang joined NAS in 2018. Together with her fellow conservators at the Archives Conservation Lab, she carries out conservation treatments for historical records and supports the collections and exhibitions at the National Archives of Singapore, National Library and the Former Ford Factory.

Tay Jam Meng is a paper and photograph conservator in private practice. He has over 23 years of professional experience in the preventive and interventive conservation of art on paper, with a specialty in photographic conservation. Jam Meng holds a master’s degree with distinction in Preventive Conservation from Northumbria University, UK. He also completed training and internships at The Centre for Photographic Conservation (London), The British Library and the Canadian Conservation Institute, including an earlier career at the Heritage Conservation Centre (HCC), Singapore. Jam Meng has contributed to various publications on the conservation of Glass Plate Negatives, Ambrotype and paper-based artworks.
