Singapore's maritime identity is often defined by bustling ports and global shipping routes, but there's another story bubbling just beneath the surface. This talk dives into the rich recreational water culture that has shaped our island nation for over two centuries. From colonial regattas to humble bathing pagars during the colonial period, from Kallang Basin's transformation to East Coast Park's creation during the nation-building decades, locals and visitors alike have always found joy, community and identity in our waterways. Through photographs, maps and personal accounts from the National Library and Archives, discover how water-based recreation has been woven into the fabric of our social life and national story.
