The "Bananas and Maritime Heritage" workshop explores the link between Singapore’s maritime history and the diverse banana varieties that have arrived via global shipping routes. Participants will learn about different banana types—like Pisang Raja, Pisang Ambon, and Pisang Berangan—that were transported in shipping containers, shaping Singapore’s culinary landscape. The workshop also features a hands-on segment where participants can make banana kueh, a beloved local treat. After the session, they can either enjoy their freshly made kueh or take it home as a delicious souvenir, connecting the past and present through both food and maritime heritage.

Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), established in 1996, drives Singapore’s development as a global hub port and international maritime centre. In 2026, as MPA marks its 30th anniversary, the Singapore HeritageFest 2026 spotlights Maritime Heritage. MPA has initiated collaborations with our partners to curate a series of programmes spanning vessel visits, guided tours, talks and fun lifestyle activities—bringing Singapore’s rich maritime story to life for all.
