At 184 years old, Thian Hock Keng, the oldest standing Hokkien temple, whispers many little-known stories of courage, hope and transformation in Singapore.

Thian Hock Keng was built in traditional southern Fujian architectural style and not a single nail was not used in construction of the original structure. The exposed beams and brackets are richly carved with heroes at war, sages on horsebacks, saints on clouds and auspicious flowers and animals glided with gold. The roofscape is the temple’s crowning glory as it consists of curved ridges, elongated eave with upturned southern Fujian “swallow tails” end sweeps and generous ornamentation.

Thian Hock Keng

The magnificent Thian Hock Keng is one of the oldest and most revered Hokkien temples in Singapore. Built in traditional southern Chinese style, this architectural masterpiece was bedecked with western and local elements during an early 20th century restoration, which well-reflected the multicultural nature of the Singapore society. Come visit this 184-year-old national monument and find out some fun facts about Singapore by tracing the foot-steps of our forefathers!
