From Pulau to Table: A Storytelling and Dining Experience is a dining and storytelling collaboration between Orang Laut SG and Azfar Maswan. Across a collaborative menu, participants encounter ingredients rooted in the Straits and Singapore’s coastal environments, including telur ikan, latok, and cooking techniques inspired by dishes such as umai and asam pedas. Drawing connections to the Selat Jawa and Batam Islands, the menu reflects the movement of people, ingredients, and ideas across maritime Southeast Asia. Interwoven with the meal, Orang Laut SG shares stories of the Orang Laut in Singapore, offering insight into lived relationships with the sea, food practices, and coastal lifeways. The session situates cuisine within broader histories of trade, migration, and shoreline change, inviting participants to consider how maritime food traditions carry memory and continuity across generations. Together, the culinary and storytelling elements create a reflective space to engage with Singapore’s Straits-based heritage through taste, history, and lived experience.
