Saturday (9 & 23 May 2026): 9:00am - 11:30am

In conjunction with SHF2026’s theme on Maritime Heritage, this guided tour invites you to uncover the untold stories of the black headscarf women—one of Singapore’s lesser-known yet vital communities within its maritime past.

Retrace the paths they once walked through docks, shophouses, and coastal spaces, following lives shaped by hard work, tenacity, and survival. Often unseen, these women laboured tirelessly behind the scenes, anchoring families and sustaining cultural practices through resilience and grit.

Through their quiet strength and everyday struggles, they contributed significantly to Singapore’s maritime and economic development. This tour brings their stories to light—revealing how Singapore’s rise as a port city was shaped not only by ships and trade, but also by the enduring spirit of its women.

The tour will be led by heritage researcher Lynn Wong and Yvonne Yee, daughter of a Black Headscarf Woman. It will be conducted primarily in English, with selected personal accounts shared in Chinese by Yvonne.
