Saturday (2 May): 2.30pm - 4pm

Moderated by Gabriel Loy, this panel features artists Yip Yew Chong, Khairulddin Wahab, and ila to explore their unique ways of interpreting and responding to our nation's maritime heritage. Hear from the artists’ the thought process behind selected artworks that draw inspiration from Singapore's maritime history and discover how art can illuminate historical narratives!

About the Moderator:
Gabriel Loy is the Founder and Director of 1961, a contemporary art gallery in Singapore. He develops exhibitions and programmes with artists with an emphasis on practice and context. His work centres on building sustained relationships with collectors and institutions, and on shaping how artworks are encountered through conversation and public programmes. Loy works across gallery and cultural settings, and is interested in how art offers new ways of engaging with history and place.

About the Panelists:
Yip Yew Chong (YC) practises murals, canvas paintings and digital art. His most visible works are murals on the streets. They often tell stories of the site’s local life in a bygone era.
YC was an accountant for 25 years before switching to do art full time in 2018.

Khairulddin Wahab is a Singaporean artist who creates paintings that delve into the legacies of colonialism on the environment and societies in Southeast Asia. His work has been shown globally in cities like New York, Paris, and Hong Kong, and is held in collections of institutions such as the Singapore Art Museum, Kadist Foundation, and National Heritage Board.

Across performance, photography, and various media, ila weaves her own body and emotions into the peripheries of lived experience and unspoken narratives. In negotiations with different realms of existence and the aftermaths of trauma, she reconfigures and merges speculative fiction with factual histories conceiving them as sites for empathy and connectivity.
