Beach Road takes its name from a sandy stretch of shoreline that has all but faded from our memories. Now home to the world-renowned Raffles Hotel, the former shoreline seemed to have already found fame through the retelling of the late 13th century exploits of Singapura’s first sovereign. As the newly minted British trading post’s first exclusive neighbourhood, the beach was bookended at its far end by a royal quarter flavoured by sojourners from across the Nusantara, and from lands beyond the Arabian Sea.

Join Jerome Lim for a walk to uncover the ‘beach’ in Beach Road and discover how the flow and ebb of the tides along its now forgotten shores have left lasting and colourful imprints.
