CHOLA 1025CE: A Maritime Combat Odyssey

by The Kalari Academy
22 May • 07:00pm

The Chola naval expansion acted as a maritime bridge, connecting the distinct lineages of Silambam, Silat, and Muay Boran. While each art maintained its unique heritage, this era of trade and conquest fostered a cross-pollination of techniques, amalgamating ancient warrior sciences.

CHOLA-1025CE--A-Maritime-Combat-Odyssey

This performance will be presented at HOMEGROUND @ ACM Green.

Friday (22 May): 7pm - 7.30pm

This performance explores the profound historical ""passing of knowledge"" facilitated by the Chola Dynasty’s naval supremacy (11th Century). As a dominant thalassocracy, the Cholas transformed the Bay of Bengal into a maritime bridge, connecting the Indian subcontinent with the kingdoms of Southeast Asia. While Silambam, Silat, and Muay Boran each possess their own distinct regional lineages and cultural identities, they share a deep-rooted history of cross-pollination born from centuries of trade and conquest.

The choreography traces this military evolution, showing how the grounded, weapon-based science of South Indian infantry amalgamated with indigenous movements to shape the fluid, deceptive footwork of Silat and the explosive power of Muay Boran. This is not merely a demonstration of combat, but a narrative of cultural flow. It honours the individual spirit of each martial art while celebrating the ancient maritime currents that allowed these warrior sciences to influence and strengthen one another across the seas.
